I’ve been living in Little Village practically all my life. I had no idea of what social justice was until I came to Social Justice High School. Being here has taught me so much about people and life. I learned that everybody has their own different thoughts of what social justice means. This is exactly what social justice means to me. Social justice is having your own voice to speak for what you believe, no matter who you are.
In Social Justice High School we have goals we want to achieve. We also set goals with ourselves and face challenges together. I believe that all the people that cherish social justice know what is wrong and what is right. Struggling as a Social Justice High School family exemplifies “unity” because we struggle together. We face all the problems that come to us as a whole without leaving anyone behind. As a school, we help each other get through obstacles to succeed. We each prepare ourselves for the outside world.
In order to achieve social justice we need to work together. It takes not only two people, but instead a larger group to get more things done. By having more people united, it can give us the advantage to have more perspectives and deny all the things that people use against us such as: race, religion, gender, and social class. Social justice is not judging others for what they do, or judging them for what they can’t do; it is giving the equal rights for everybody. Social Justice does not care for the abilities of a person; it does not say that you have to know how to do everything in this world the correct way in order to call yourself “human.” Social justice looks for the good actions and intentions you have to help others such as whether you are willing to give up your seat for another person without hesitating to look at their gender, race, or ability.
The people that want to achieve social justice have great desire to help others open up to society and speak for themselves. Those people do not care to fail. They take risks without thinking about it twice when it comes to having some equality for everyone.
I believe everyone has a part in the struggle. Even without actual participating physically, everyone can do some part mentally.
Having fire is having a huge passion for something. That is the Social Justice High School definition. When you want something, you need to fight in order to get results. Social Justice High School is a different place because we never give up. Although times do get rough, we keep going. This is why Social Justice High School is one unique school that has made history and will always keep making history. SoJo focuses on the littlest things that can affect any person physically and mentally. It teaches everyone to not make excuses, to instead make improvements. Social justice knows its overall goal: to teach the skills we need to make life better for not only ourselves, but for the people we love.
